An updated classification of the poems I liked most in the Penguin Modern Poets series (1962-79)
A57

A while back I finished going through the 2122 poems in this series. I selected the 227 that I liked, which I categorised under the following 29 headers. (A previous categorisation after I had looked at only the first quarter or so of the poems is here.) Of the 227, I chose 84 as having special merit; and of those 84, my 13 favourites of all. The 84 contain poems in every category apart from numbers 10 and 28. That none from category 28 made a showing among the 84 is possibly partly explained by my dislike of poems that are about writing poems. If a person is writing poetry then as far as I am concerned they ought to have something to say rather than simply writing about making poetry.

The categories that have the most poems in the 227 are numbers 2 (Emptiness, Lack, Yearning, Weariness, 17 poems), 8 (Lovers, 16), 7 (Lost Love, 15), 26 (Nature, 14), 1 (Dreams and Fantasy, 12), and 20 (Class, 11). The categories with the most in the 84 are numbers 7 (Lost Love, 8 poems), 8 (Lovers, 7), 20 (Class), and 26 (Nature) (both with 6). The categories with more than one poem (each having two) among the 13 are numbers 11 (Mental Illness), 19 (War in the Past or Present), 20 (Class), and 23 (School).
